GOOMBAY LABS, formerly GL Candles, started in 2015 during a period where life was bleak, and adulting was hard. I was an overworked, underpaid, stressed undergraduate student by day and hotel supervisor by night. After a particularly grueling meeting at work where I was thrown under the bus for not making sales quotas, I recall mindlessly wandering into the spa to 'catch myself', a place I never frequented. Those 2 minutes simply sitting down, listening to the ambient sounds, and basking in those aromas, boosted my mood in a way I never knew was possible. This lead to 2 minute daily visits to the spa where I would just sit in the waiting area, and then head to my shift. Eventually, I figured out aromatherapy was where I needed to get my mood boosting fixes from, which lead me to candlemaking. The rest is history after that. I started making candles for myself, and after people noticed that I was happier, I started giving them as gifts, and after getting so many requests for more, I started selling them. Fast forward 2 years after I officially launched in 2016, I had a growing candle business, and I was happy to be helping others who were in stressful periods of their lives, experience a little stress relief through candles and aromatherapy. But as the saying goes, it always is something and ya can't catch a break. In 2018, I developed a bad case of eczema and shifting clouds. Not one for aesthetics, I didn't really care how it made my skin look as I'm pretty dark skinned, but the itching and prickling became so unbearable I sought medical advice to no avail. Finally, a dermatologist recommended I adopt a skincare routine, preferably a natural one. After shelling out a quite a few dollars and importing natural brands to use for myself, I decided to cut cost and develop my own for my own relief and pocketbook. I did a few cosmetic chemistry certifications and developed my own very simple skincare that helped to manage my flare-ups. It was then that I decided to share my formulas with a few associates who were struggling with similar ailments, however, I soon found out no one wanted to spend the time to create the products, and so, another venture started. To make things easier, I restructured GL Candles, created a brand for the candles (GOOMBAY CANDLES™), created a brand for the skincare, (MAN IN THE SUN™), volun-told my mom and nephew to help me, and together we created GOOMBAY LABS, a small direct-to-consumer manufacturer with a mission to create safe, transparent, and sustainable cosmetics, using contemporary artisan measures, in order to promote a positive wellbeing for all. We are artisanal cosmetic crafters. Essentially, this means we craft every product in small batches using our contemporary artisan methods. Every product, every process, every ingredient is carefully crafted, tested, and handled with passionate Bahamian hands. This artisanal approach allows us to craft premium products in a way that machines can not.
